About The Artist A University of South
Carolina graduate and former Air Force officer, with a Masters Degree in International Studies, Mitch
Oates has traveled extensively around the world,
and utilizes places he has visited for his subject matter.
Mitch receives his inspiration from old castles, ruins, cathedrals
and monuments, setting them against colorful sunsets, larger-than-life
sunrises, fantastic celestial panoramas, or looming storms.
His subject matter includes ancient Egyptian pyramids, temple
ruins, European palaces, deserted prisons, and even abandoned gas
stations. His recent work features
subjects in and around Columbia, South Carolina. His finished pieces
are realistic, but border on the edge of abstraction.
Mitch’s work highlights the temporary and passing nature of man
against the strength and beauty of nature
The moods evoked in Mitch’s works range from romantic to gothic. Mitch’s medium is digitally enhanced photography. As a self-taught ‘Cyber Artist’, Mitch manipulates photographic images, removing transient reminders of the modern world, such as street signs, vehicles, power lines and pedestrians. The result is an image as it might look on the last day of time. Mitch began manipulating images on the computer several years ago, at first for amusement. As his skills broadened and developed, he started taking some of his old tourist snapshots and reworking them as a hobby. After local artists saw his work, he was encouraged to pursue his interests by installing his finished pieces in a Columbia gallery. Mitch will also perform custom work. He has completed several pieces commissioned by local businesses, homeowners and churches. |
